History 2nd trimester.

Middle Ages.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, a new period in history and art called the Middle Ages appears.

Music had strong ties to religion. The monasteries were centres of knowledge and culture. Choirs of monks would sing a cappella in unison.

The best example was the Gregorian chant. The themes were religious because it was a form of prayer. Hardly any instruments were played.

Another type of music was developed by the songs and dances that the minstrels and troubadours performed to entertain peasants and nobles.

Renaissance.

In the same century that America was discovered, another change was happening in society. It was called the Renaissance period.

Thanks to the invention of the printing press, information was able to reach the
whole population. Knowledge was no longer the privilege of a few.

Royal palaces and the mansions of the nobility opened their doors to dance, song and instrumental music. Brilliant musicians were in high demand.

Dances became more and more elaborate and spectacular in every way. Stringed instruments
were the most common.

The themes of songs were no longer just religious. They were also secular, with tales of chivalry and courtly love.
